A mobile breast screening unit will visit Morrisons in Bilston on Saturdays 17 and 24 October, offering women the chance to speak with specialist staff and learn more about mammography services.

Women aged 50 to 71 are eligible for breast screening and are routinely invited every three years. Women over 71 can self-refer by contacting the Breast Screening Programme on 01384 244177 or 01543 576235.

Why screening matters

Around 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast screening can detect cancer before symptoms develop, when treatment is often more effective. Breast screening saves around 1,300 lives each year in the UK.

However, almost half of women do not attend their first free mammogram. Concerns about pain, uncertainty about the procedure, time constraints, or unanswered questions can deter attendance.

What to expect at Bilston

The mobile unit provides an informal setting for women to meet the screening team, ask questions and address myths about breast screening. There is no pressure and no obligation to proceed with screening.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: "Regular breast screening plays an important role in detecting cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be successful."

Women who have recently missed a mammogram appointment may be able to rebook while visiting the mobile unit.

How to access screening

Anyone invited for screening but unable to attend should contact the Breast Screening Programme on 01384 244177 or 01543 576235 to rebook at a more convenient time.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of breast cancer – such as a new lump, changes to breast skin, or nipple discharge – should contact their GP as soon as possible rather than wait for screening.
