City of Wolverhampton Council is offering free Independent Travel Training to help young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) gain confidence and independence when travelling.

The personalised programme provides one-to-one support tailored to each person's needs. Training covers journey planning, personal safety, using public transport and handling unexpected situations while travelling.

Working with Schools

The council's Independent Travel Training Co-ordinator, Alistair Boddie, works with SEND schools to design and deliver bespoke programmes for groups of pupils alongside individual support.

What the Council Says

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said the training "opens the world up to young people and gives reassurance to parents and carers" by teaching safe travel and developing life skills.

Alistair Boddie said: "Every young person is different, which is why our training is tailored to the individual's needs and goals. It is incredibly rewarding to see young people grow in confidence and achieve greater independence, opening up new opportunities for education, employment and social activities."

How to Access the Scheme

The programme is free to eligible Wolverhampton residents aged 11 and over. To find out more and check eligibility, visit the Wolverhampton SEND Local Offer online at the Help to travel independently section.
