Birmingham Dogs Home has announced a £4.1 million refurbishment of its Wolverhampton centre, which is closing temporarily from Monday 12 October.

The charity plans to reopen the site in summer 2027 under the name Wolverhampton Dogs Home. It will remain part of the Birmingham Dogs Home organisation.

Dogs currently being cared for at the centre have been relocated to its Birmingham site. The charity says Wolverhampton will retain a reduced capacity to receive and support local stray dogs during the work.

New kennels and improved facilities

Construction is expected to begin later this month. The planned refurbishment includes changes to kennels, the centre's operating layout and visitor facilities, with the aim of creating a safer, calmer environment for dogs and supporting their rehabilitation and rehoming.

The charity, which has supported dogs in the region since 1892, describes the project as one of the largest investments in its history.

Sally Insley, head of income generation at Birmingham Dogs Home, said: “We have cared for thousands of stray, abandoned and relinquished dogs over the years, and we know every dog deserves the best possible care.”

She thanked supporters whose contributions have helped make the work possible and said the investment would help the charity respond to demand for its services.

Support during the refurbishment

The organisation is continuing to care for dogs through its Birmingham centre while the Wolverhampton work takes place. People interested in supporting the charity or finding out about fostering can visit the Birmingham Dogs Home website.
