Free flu vaccinations are underway in Wolverhampton schools this autumn term. All children from Reception to Year 11, including those who are home educated, are eligible for the vaccine.
Healthcare professionals from Vaccination UK will deliver the vaccinations in primary, secondary and special schools across Wolverhampton. For most children, the vaccine will be given via a nasal spray. An injectable vaccine is available for children who cannot have the nasal spray for medical reasons, or who require a pork gelatine free alternative.
How parents can give consent
Schools are sending information to families about the vaccine. Parents and carers can give consent online using a link that will be sent by text message or email. Anyone who prefers to give consent over the phone can contact Vaccination UK on 01902 200077 or email wolverhampton@v-uk.co.uk.
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community at City of Wolverhampton Council, said the vaccine is "quick and safe" and encourages parents to complete consent forms as soon as possible. She added: "It's important for children to get vaccinated in the autumn so they will have the best protection when flu season begins in winter. The vaccination takes a couple of weeks to offer full protection, so please give your consent in a timely manner."
Catch-up clinics and younger children
Catch-up clinics will be available at various locations around Wolverhampton and the Black Country for children who miss the school vaccination programme. Children aged 2 and 3, and children with some long-term health conditions, are also eligible for the flu vaccine through their GP or some participating pharmacies.
