A play exploring the lives of migrant care workers and the families behind the job is coming to Wolverhampton’s Arena Theatre on Friday 23 October.
Lightstreams, written by Mary Mazzilli and produced by Lumenis Theatre and Turnpike Productions, follows Maurice and Hermia as they try to build a life in the UK.
Maurice takes pride in his work at a residential care home, while Hermia faces isolation and the demands of caring for their young son. When a global crisis requires Maurice to live at the home to protect its residents, the couple must negotiate the competing needs of work and family.
The people behind the care
Developed through interviews with migrant health and social care workers, care managers and other professionals, the play considers belonging, racism, family separation and the emotional pressures of caring for others.
Mazzilli said she wanted audiences to look beyond headlines and recognise the people behind the uniforms. The production is directed by Richard Bland.
The organisers say the Wolverhampton performance will include a post-show discussion with local councillor Obaida Ahmed.
